We would like to congratulate grandmaster
Valery Salov with his 49th birthday today.
Salov was one of the strongest players in
the world at the end of the 1980s and the
start of the 1990s.The polishborn became
European junior champion in 1983-84.
He shared the 1st place with GM Alexander
Belyavsky in the 1987 USSR Championship
but lost the playoff 0-2.His best result was
in the FIDE World Chess Championship
1996. He qualified for the Candidates and
won his first two matches against Khalifman
and Timman before he lost in the semis to
Gata Kamsky.The world then surpassed
new queen indian duels with the FIDE world
champion Anatoly Karpov.Salov struggled
with healt problems at the end of his career.
He retired from chess in 2000. He also has
a passion for backgammon. That could be
seen during the World Cup tournament in
Skellefteå in 1989 where swedish tv caught
him on his way to the backgammon room!
