Today dad and I arrived in Tromsø to follow the chess-olympics. We
stayed some hours in the playing hall before we relaxed in the hotel in the
evening with some of the newspapers. Father read Dagbladet where
grandmaster Einar J.Gausel commented on the game Urkedal-Ivanchuk
from the 2nd roundmatch Norway 2-Ukraine which ended 2-2. Urkedal made
a great result beating Ivanchuk with the white pieces.

Jan Sigmund Berglund and the organizers can be seen all over the town
which enjoys a real chessboom these days. In hotel Saga this poster also
got its place.

Exchampion Garri Kasparov is president candidate of the chess federation
FIDE. Can he overtake the reigning president Kirsan Iljumzjinov at the
elections on Monday 11.August?

In the Harbourside near Nerstranda center some players were gathered
for some “big board chess” this evening.

Joker had some chocolate and juice which was bought for the evening`s
refreshment.

The evening`s dinner in Egon was a good experiment. Pepper steak, Fish
and some apple cake made it a pleasant evening in Nordens Paris.

Paletten grill is still open. Here Sverre Karlsen and his chess friends used
to battle it out in the good old days for the coffeehouse chess in Tromsø.

The 4th round was a pleasant for Norway who beat Poland 2,5-1,5 after
Magnus Carlsen beating GM Radoslaw Wojtaszek and setting up a 5th
round encounter with the strong Armenian team tomorrow. We might get
a meeting between Aronian and Carlsen tomorrow. Russia will also meet
Bulgaria tomorrow. The question is whether Kramnik and Topalov will
continue their Toiletgate-dispute.Our ladies lost 1-3 against the Czech
Republic. I will come back with more from Tromsø tomorrow.The 5th round
starts 14.00.
